Fininsh Boardgaming Championships are held in the beginning of June and I’ll be participating in the event. CH is a team event so I’ll also have three of my friends gaming in my team and what this means is that we have to prepare to meet the others teams and best players in Finland.
Games that are played in the tournament are Dominion, Ingenious, Traders of Genoa, Power Grid (France), Notre Dame, Pillars of the Earth, Ticket to Ride and Thurn & Taxis. There’s great games and variety is huge, no complaints there, but what it means is that we need to practise a bit for the tournament since every player is playing four different games.

Our first live training session was on Saturday and 3 of the 4 members of our team attended. I have played all other games exept Genoa from the list but my two friends have a little less experience and there’s many games they haven’t played at all. We began with Pillars of the Earth and after I had explained the rules we began to play. Pillars is a game where you really have to know the cards, you have to have money in the end game and you have to be lucky with your pawns. I went with money/sand combo which works rather well. Others wondered what to do for the first turn but grasped the idea of the game after that and went for stone and wood.
As usual game was tight until the last round where my other friend made the mistake of not having money in the end – the three first pawns from the bag were his and that sealed his game (eventhogh we became second). After that I was able to get the two available metals out of the last round and won the game easily. I liked Pillars when it came out but have not played it that much in 1,5 years. It’s a good game but there’s nothing that would make it great.

The second game of the night was Thurn & Taxis and as for the Pillars my friends had not played the game before. I’m not a huge fan of the game and haven’t played it in about 2 years but occationally it goes without pain. While I’m not a pro in T&T I could not help my friends too much with the strategies and we took the game as a training game. Game was tight (and it would have been even tighter if would have played scoring rules correctly) and I think we found someone else to play the game than me in the tournament which is perfect.

We ended our live session with two player Ingenious. I’ve always liked Ingenious and I think it really shines with two when game does not last too long and you really can play against the other player. When you have more players it’s much harder to block others players and there’s stonger luck element in the game. I blocked blue from the game after I had had a strong influence in it and my frind did not have a chance to win. But he liked the game which is always positive.
I also played a few games with the fourth member of our team in BSW on Sunday; Ingenious, Thurn & Taxis and Dominion. Ingenious and Dominion we played with two and T&T with four so that other two players were random BSW users. It was fun to play and it was especially fun to win all the games. Winning Dominion 45-0 was a good end for the day and a reminder that one has to practise the games for the tournament of you get your ass kicked.
