Competo releases Settlers expansions in Finnish
Filed Under Cities and Knights of Catan, News, Seafarers of Catan, Settlers of Catan | Leave a Comment
Information was given to me that Competo will release Seafarers [ BGG] and Cities and Knights [ BGG] expansions for Settlers of Catan [ BGG] in Finnish. These are a nice addition to a already sizable amount of games of the Catan family in Finnish.
I’ve played only the Seafarers expansion and like it a lot. It brings variation to the original game and brings an element of expedition to the game. Cities and Knights is also a solid expansion although I haven’t had chance to try it. Hopefully the new realease is going to end up on a table someday and I can give you my comments on it.

Tuonela Production’s The Club out in the autumn
Filed Under News, The Club | 2 Comments
I got information from Jussi Autio from Tuonela Productions which reveals that company’s new board game The Club is coming out sometime during next autumn. The Club is a game for 2-4 players that are age of 13+ and the game lasts 45-60 minutes. What this means is that game is targeted more for those who are in the gaming hobby that for families and non-gamers. FRED Distribution distributes the game for the international market and The Club should be available in Spiel 2008. Tuonela Productions has also plans to make a computer game out of The Club.

I also had an oppurtunity to see some of the graphics in the game and I was impressed – The Club looks very cool. The gameplay of The Club looks also interesting. In the game players are trying to form couples in a bar (The Club). The Club is a tile laying game and tiles are layed on the table similarly as in The aMAZEing Labyrinth; tiles are pushed to the board from the sides of the board thus resulting some tiles to drop off the board. Every tile is a character, every character has four abilities and a secret ability and points are awarded to players creating couples by the amount of similar abilities of the two characters. There are three types of special tiles (Bouncer, Celebrity and Bully) with special abilities that stir up the game a bit.
The most hilarious aspect of the game seems to be the special abilities which score points in the end for the players. A character might have a large mojo which ,under certain circumstances, gives player additional points or character might have beautiful roommate which means triple action after the night at the bar and thus more points. Character can also have a nasty desease or he/she can be engaged and that’s not a good thing after you have left the bar together.
As I’ve said before I’m really waiting for The Club. It’s definitely different from the mainstream Eurogames in its theme. There’s probably those who get offended by the theme and straightforward approach of the game but I believe that atleast in Finland it doesn’t really matter. We are not narrow-minded despite the fact that we usually seem to be rather quiet and introvert. It’s also interesting to see Finnish game in the international board game market and observe how it succeedes amid the tough competition and growing amount of games coming out each year.
PS. If you are interested enough here are the rules for The Club for you to read
PSS. And here you can find the score sheet for the game which is a concrete part of the game.

Thoughts about Saikoro
Filed Under Hey That's My Fish, Saikoro, Session | 1 Comment
Saikoro is a new 2-player abtract strategy game which is basically much like Hey! That’s My Fish! where players contruct a board with tiles and then, one by one, try to collect the tiles and block other players. In Saikoro tiles are replaced with dice and the game board is a 8 by 8 grid matrix. Rules of the game are pretty similar to HTMF with the small difference that players must remain in the distance of 6 spaces from the opponent all the time.

What struck me when I first learned of the game was the innovative way of using dice. Usually dice are considered to be a luck element in any game and thus many players do not like games with dice in a leading role. I’m not too fond of dice although there certainly are a couple of solid games which use dice in some way. In Saikoro the role of dice is totally different to most of the other games and dice are used in a way which really works; the matrix makes it extremely easy to set up the game when you just shake the game box with the matrix inside and play.
As with so many other abstract games Saikoro is easy to teach to anyone. Rules are simple but mastering the game is much harder. Game is not as complex as Chess or as elegant as Go but it’s not too bad to have some lighter and more easily approchable abstract games. And what I like probably the most is the game time. One game of Saikoro can readily be played in 10 minutes which means that you can play a few games and you still have time for something else.
Overall my first impressions of Saikoro are very positive but I’m also interested how those first impressions develop after more plays. The fact that the game isn’t as elegant as Go or as complex as Chess might also mean that the life span of the game is not long either (and because both of these classic games have survived for hundreds of year maybe similar life span is just a bit too much to ask…).

I got a mail from Czech Games which reveals that thay plan to launch a expansion for Galaxy Trucker in Spiel game fair in Essen. I’m really looking forward for this expansion because I really love the game. I hope that the new expansion will be as wacky as the free expansion that can be downloaded from Chech Games’s website.
The official text offers fun and destruction but also more control and player interaction which sounds promising. What is also ultracool is that they are going to print the Rough Road Ahead expansion and bonus cards which were given out in Essen last year with this expansion. Can’t wait…
